In-Depth Information
North Region
The North region generally stretches from the Tennessee-Alabama border to just
north of Birmingham and is known geologically as the Cumberland Plateau. This
mountainous region has seen its sandstone heights carved and weathered by the ele-
ments and the many waterways that flow through it, creating spectacular gorges,
cascading waterfalls, and ancient caverns.
Hikers in the region will find plenty of challenge and beauty. Little River
Canyon atop Lookout Mountain is one such stop. Carved over thousands of years,
the canyon resonates with the thunder of the river, culminating in a spectacular
60-foot waterfall. The views from the canyon rim are something to behold. This is
a popular location for whitewater rafters and rock climbers.
DeSoto State Park is located here, with a multitude of trails to visit the many
faces of its landscapes. In addition to panoramic views of the West Fork of Little
River and the gorge it creates, you will find several waterfalls here, including Lost
Falls, Azalea Cascade, and Indian Falls. You will also walk the trails along the
banks of the swift and boiling waters of the river itself.
