habitat.
Ruffner Mountain is an area approximately 1 mile wide and 3 miles long, and
along this narrow ridge is a series of interesting hiking trails that take you through
wetlands, hardwood forests, and back in time to the area's mining past. The main
trail that connects them all—or the “backbone,” as the Nature Center calls it—is
the Quarry Trail. This white-blazed trail runs the length of the southern end of
Ruffner Mountain, and as you walk along you will see many trails intersecting it,
making it a place that you can return to over and over again to get a new experien-
ce.
The Quarry Trail, and all trails, at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve are well marked, especially at intersections.
While the actual Quarry Trail is 1.1 miles (one way), I have added the Overlook
Trail as an extension, making the trip into a 2.7-mile out-and-back. The hike is
easy to moderate in difficulty, with a few climbs. The climbs uphill are made a bit
