In-Depth Information
rounding mountains and ridges come into view; look for white dogwoods on the
hillsides.
You will cross two streams with very nice waterfalls along the route. The first
comes at mile 1.2, with several cascades tumbling down the rocky slope. At the
1.6-mile mark—about the time you can hear and spot the next waterfall
ahead—the trail makes its way along the side of a ravine and becomes little more
than a ledge about a foot wide. Pay attention to your footing. At one point a feeder
creek to the stream far below cuts across the trail. The path is a bit washed out
here, so be careful as you make your way around this spot.
Shortly after the washout you'll reach the second falls, another beautiful tiered
cascade. The trail crosses the creek at the base of the falls. From here the trail
makes its way just below a ridge for nice mountain views, especially in late fall
and winter when the leaves are down.
The turnaround for this trip is a great campsite right on the trail. It is a large,
flat area with ample room for several tents. A very large fire ring was built here,
and the area is groomed (raked) to help prevent fires. If you're looking to get
away for a night, I highly recommend this spot.
