In-Depth Information
Pass a canoe launch to the right (east). There are great views
of the lake and tupelo and cypress swamps along this section.
0.1
Walk along another boardwalk.
0.2
Come to the observation tower. Feel free to make the climb, but
take your time. It is a steep climb. Continuing on, the trail
leaves the boardwalk and becomes a narrow dirt footpath. In
less than 0.1 mile, cross a 30-foot bridge over a creek to the
north. A wood-burned sign here shows the direction to Secret
Lake. You will begin seeing the red-and-green trail directional
signs on the trees and posts here. There are also several
benches from here on. After the boardwalk the trail becomes a
narrow dirt path. Watch for atamasco lilies in the spring along
with silverbells.
0.3
The trail follows the banks of another cypress pond to your left
(northeast), then narrows as it travels between two ponds. A
rusty barbwire fence is between you and the pond to the right.
0.4
Pass an old US Fish and Wildlife boundary sign. In 50 feet
cross a wooden footbridge over a creek. In less than 0.1 mile,
pass through an area of smooth-leaf palmettos with a pond to
your left (east). This section is low-lying and can be muddy, if
not underwater, after a good rain.
0.5
The trail crosses through a boggy area and across a runoff
stream for about 100 feet (be ready to get your feet wet after a
rain), then turns into an old fire lane.
0.7
The trail dips down into a gully and after a heavy rain can be
impassable. Your best bet is to take a route around the gully on
the left (east).
