The many water features within the boundaries of this 600-acre tract include
four oxbow lakes that were formed when the Cahaba changed its channel over 150
years ago, leaving behind not only the lakes but also picturesque Spanish
moss-laden tupelo trees in the swamps. And Perry is a birder's paradise, with over
200 species of birds having been identified here (a complete list is available in the
free brochure that you can pick up at the park's entrance).
The first stop along the Perry Lake Loop is a beautiful bald cypress swamp.
There are three man-made features of interest. Near the parking lot are several
unused buildings with a unique architectural design, built by students of the
Auburn University Rural Studio. There is also a covered bridge over a swift
stream and a 100-foot observation tower that you can climb to get a bird's-eye
view of the park and river from above the canopy.
You will find several trails here that lead you to all of this beauty. But before I
