In-Depth Information
The Cemetery Loop Trail comes out to the banks of Chickasaw Creek.
You will also get a little bit of a history lesson at the park. At the entrance to the
park next to the information center you will find the former Eight Mile A.M.E.
Church. This small structure, built in 1879 in the neighboring town of Eight Mile,
was moved to the park to serve as a museum. The museum features artifacts of
Native American culture from as far back as 1500 BC and photos and items from
the city's past. Admission is free. If the building is locked, just ask the attendant at
the office to let you in.
The area around the park has had quite a history. Explorer Hernando DeSoto
first visited the area around 1540. Pirates also ventured through this region, using
Chickasaw Creek as their primary point of entry from the Mobile River and Bay.
And the outlaw Cooper Gang, who roamed the Southeast robbing stagecoaches
and businesses, lived here in the late 1800s. This rugged gang helped runaway
slaves flee the area, only to sell them to plantations in other states.
