3. Subtract 40:
112° - 40° = 72°
Thus, 22°C = 72°F.
Obviously, knowing how to make these temperature conversion calculations is
useful, but it is generally more practical to use a temperature conversion table.
If you have no problem remembering when to use 5/9 and 9/5 in the appropriate
formula, then temperature conversions can simply be made using the standard for-
mulas listed earlier:
•
°C = 5/9(°F - 32)
•
°F = 9/5(°C) + 32
■
Example 2.29
Problem
: Convert 56°F to °C.
Solution:
(5/9) × (56°F - 32) = (5/9) × 24 = 13.3°C
■
Example 2.30
Problem:
Convert 68°F to °C.
Solution
:
(5/9) × (68°F - 32) = (5/9) × 36 = 19.9

Example 2.31
Problem
: Convert 41°F to °C.
Solution
:
(5/9) × (41°F - 32) = (5/9) × 9 = 4.9°C
■
Example 2.32
Problem
: Convert 52°F to °C.
Solution
:
(5/9) × (52°F - 32) = (5/9) × 20 = 11.1°C
■
Example 2.33
Problem
: Convert 102°C to °F.
Solution
:
[(9/5) × 102°C] + 32 = 183.6 + 32 = 215.6°F
