In-Depth Information
Development
This is a summary of the first presentation the designers made to the clients.
Design problem to solve/goal:
How to make children experience the history and creative possibilities of typography.
Note 1:
Use a selection of 5 different typefaces for the entire exhibition!
1 pixel face + 1 brush script + 1 text letter + 1 slab serif + 1 fat face (marshmallowy)
Note 2:
Combine high- and low-tech where/when possible! Wood + electronics + screen-
printing + laser-cutting
Sketches (thoughts on the interior):
An exhibition space like an emptied-out toy box, spread out over and sunk into the
floor, engaging yet surprisingly organized and full of hidden facts.
Thoughts:
Five stations made out of screen-printed plywood, covered with type, child propor-
tions yet accentuating the height of the space
Pixel facts (example: the first Nokia consumer phone had a display of 84 x 48 pixels)
Translucent PVC cubes (c. 10 x 10cm)
LED lights
Micro-controllers
Historical references:
Design for a newspaper stand by Herbert Bayer (1924)
Kiosk by Michel de Klerk (c. 1919-1923)
Dylaby (Stedelijk Museum) by Daniel Spoerri (1961)
Timeline:
From sounds and shapes to letterforms and compositions, gaining meaning, becoming
an experience!
(A brief history of typography)

WAF! WAT? W! (Shapes and sounds make letters)
