500 surveys were conducted by Beresford and offered valuable insights into the ped-
estrian experience:
• 33% of locals didn't know which way north was.
• 24% of visitors did not know how to get to their next destination.
• 13% of locals were not familiar with the area they were surveyed in.
• 27% of visitors couldn't name the borough they were in.
• 27% of visitors and 9% of New Yorkers admitting to being lost in the previous
week!
Existing wayfinding material was found to be inconsistent, as content on signs and
the scale, placement and overall designs of signs varied in each neighbourhood. Di-
gital and printed material suffered the same problem. There was also no consistent
overall visual identity or 'brand' in place.
