Chapter 7: Information design in practice: print, interactive
and environmental
In this chapter, we focus on how the final outcomes were achieved on a di-
verse range of projects. These have been selected to represent three areas:
print, interactive and environmental design. We explore the problem-solving
routes the designers have taken on each project. The case studies discuss what
challenges have been faced and, in some instances, what the restrictions or
opportunities may have been when designing for one of these specific modes
of delivery.
Design outcomes
In this chapter, we seek to highlight and identify the different considerations that have
to be taken into account when designing information for a particular medium. The
creators of each project featured offer insights into their approach and what their in-
tentions and ambitions were when working on these specific briefs. We ask what in-
spires them and what influences their initial ideas and subsequent design directions,
and ultimately how they realized these in the final outcome.
We hope you agree that the diversity of the work featured in this chapter is testament
to the possibilities and the breadth of outcomes achievable within these three distinct
fields of information design.
Routes for print-based information design
Information design in print takes many forms. It is often considered to be mainly
charts and diagrams in topics, but, as we have established in earlier chapters, a page in
a newspaper is a form of information design just as a printed sign in the city centre is.
