In-Depth Information
Work in development pinned up on the wall to evaluate variations of the design and get input
from those involved in its inception.
The articles deliberately draw up from the bottom of the screen and over the top of
the section fronts. Once in this level, a user can choose to navigate article to article,
section through section. The tab at the top allows the core navigation on the right of
the app to remain available, but can also be used to indicate the section the user is in.
The team spent a long time creating templates that allowed them to reflect the range
of articles: large features have large pictures; comment articles make more of the ty-
pography, while regular columns are illustrated with byline pictures or other graphic
devices.
Other benefits of a digital device were utilized on articles, but were deliberately lim-
ited to those features that would see the most use. Related articles are linked together
(the print version would refer to page numbers, while in the app there is just a direct
link), so that people can read all around the subject. Links are provided to updates on
the newspaper's website in cases where the story has moved on, and to videos when
they add something to the story. As the articles are delivered as HTML, the team has
the benefit of sharing and copying, along with all the styling attributes offered.
Outcome
In the future the designers aim to add more interactive elements and galleries, but
each time these will be very straightforward and appropriate; they resist adding bells
and whistles just for the sake of it.
Andy believes that his team created something that is a new proposition, something
that is different from other digital offerings. The way it is produced and built, with
a small dedicated team producing a daily iPad edition, means that it can adapt to the
news each day, just like a newspaper.
