Chapter 5: Realizing the design through appropriate media
This chapter looks at the various media available to designers and how to real-
ize solutions using different kinds of formats, software and materials. It exam-
ines how the choice of media and materials has an impact on how the design
is perceived within specific environments. We look at designing for multiple
platforms, especially in the light of the recent rise of mobile phone and tab-
let applications, and how designers have used software such as Processing to
display data visually.
Explanation of media
The choice of media for any project is an important one. It should be sympathetic to
the subject matter and be part of the communication process. Media can be broken
down into three basic categories. These are not by any means set, but for our purposes
they are: print, screen and environmental (which includes three-dimensional).
The media chosen is intrinsic to the design and should not be an afterthought. From
the paper on which an image is printed to the acrylic or metal used as signage in
wayfinding, the information designer has much to consider. Certain materials may be
beyond the realms of the designer. If contributing a design for an existing magazine,
for example, the choice of paper might be beyond your control. There are particular
reasons why designers choose certain materials or media. There are several factors
that may influence their choice. Information design is a vast subject that covers print,
environmental and screen-based design. Each of these areas demands sensitivity to
their different requirements.
