THE SUNSHINE
COAST
Lund also marks the entrance to the
marvellous Desolation Sound Marine
Park , whose warm waters are
perfect for observing a wide variety of
marine animal species. More and more
people also come here to go sea kay-
aking, an activity that even beginners
can enjoy.
The Sunshine Coast runs along
the Strait of Georgia, bounded by
Desolation Sound to the north, the
Coast Mountains to the east and Howe
Sound farther south. Most people get
to the Sunshine Coast by boat, as there
are no roads linking Vancouver to these
resort towns; the daily comings and go-
ings are dictated by the ferry schedule.
As a result, the mentality here is com-
pletely different.
Savary Island
Savary Island is one of the Northern
Gulf Islands. It is accessible by water-
taxi from Powell River. The distance
of the crossing is about 20km. It is
nicknamed British Columbia's Hawaii
and Pleasure Island for its white sand
beaches and crystal-clear wat-
ers that make swimming a pleasure.
Large numbers of eagles visit the
island, and seal colonies frequent its
shores. Activities practised on Savary
Island include walking, cycling, swim-
ming and sunbathing, making it truly
the perfect summer destination. Visitors
here should forget their car and hop on
a bike to explore this small island and
discover its strong community spirit.
Lund
Lund is located at the beginning (or
the end, depending on what direction
you're heading in) of Highway 101; the
other end, located some 15,000km to
the south, is Puerto Montt, Chile! The
town's port is magnifi cent, with its old
hotel, adjoining shops and wooden
promenade which skirts round the
bay. Imagine a typical fi shing village
and your harbour will undoubtedly
be fi lled with the fi shing boats that are
moored here. There are many activities
to choose from here, from fi shing and
whale-watching trips to snorkelling.
Skookumchuck Rapids
The Skookumchuck Rapids of
Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial
Park are defi nitely one of the Sunshine
Coast's most spectacular features. When
the tides change, the sea water rush-
es into the Skookumchuck Narrows
Canyon as if it were a great funnel.
Skookumchuck is a Chinook word that
means “powerful water,” the signifi -
cance of which is clear when you see
the rapids with your own eyes. These
rapids are among the world's largest,
and visitors sometimes get to watch
kayakers literally surf on the waves.
