which Emily was born in 1871, but it is
nevertheless furnished in a style typical
of the period. There is a small gift shop

cerpts from Carr's writings.
Beacon Hill Park is a peaceful spot
where Emily Carr spent many happy
days drawing. A public park laid out in
1890, it features a number of trails lead-
ing through fi elds of wildfl owers and
landscaped sections, as well as what is
rumoured to be the world's tallest to-
tem pole. The ebb and fl ow of the tides
have transformed the park's shore into

SCENIC MARINE
DRIVE
This fabulous scenic coastal road, at
the bottom of the Saanich Peninsula,
leads to a number of important Victoria
attractions located inland. It passes
through the communities of Fairfi eld,
Rockland and Oak Bay.
Further North, the summit of Mount
Tolmie offers breathtaking pan-

ocean, and magnifi cent Mount Baker
and the Cascade Range in Washington
State (U.S.A.).

SAANICH
PENINSULA
Victoria lies at the southern end of the
Saanich Peninsula. The peninsula is fi rst
and foremost a suburb, as many people
who work in Victoria live here.
This region is an unavoidable part
of any itinerary involving Vancouver
Island and especially Victoria, since the
big Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal is located
in Sidney, a small town near the tip of
the peninsula, accessed via the Patricia
Bay Highway.
