Francis Rattenbury. Ten of the home's
12 rooms are furnished with period
pieces, most of which were donated to
the museum by individuals; others are
on loan from the Vancouver Museum
and some are original to the house. The
attention to detail is astounding and
anyone with an interest with Victoriana
and Art Nouveau will be delighted by
this charming little museum.
The fi ne sands of English Bay
Beach are always crowded dur-
ing the summer. At the east end of the
beach, visitors will fi nd an enormous
inukshuk created by Alvin Kanak for
the Northwest Territories pavilion at
Expo 86; it was moved to this site the
following year. The apartment high-rises
behind the beach give beach-goers the
illusion that they are lounging about at
a seaside resort like Acapulco, when
they are actually just a short distance
from the heart of Vancouver. Few cit-
ies can boast beaches so close to their
downtown core. Fleets of sailboats
skim across the magnifi cent bay, which
has recently been cleaned of pollutants.
To the west, it is bordered by the ver-
dant expanse of Stanley Park.

the nearby wilderness.

named, founded Stanley Park on a ro-

General (1888-1893), and dedicated it
“to the use and enjoyment of people of
all colours, creeds and customs for all
time.” Like New York's Central Park and
Montréal's Mount Royal, Stanley Park
was largely designed by renowned
landscape architect Frederick Law
Olmsted.
A 10km waterfront promenade known
