ers and their teams and discover a sur-
prising range of award-winning wines
that are ringing in a new era for the
province's wine industry. The VQA seal
is issued to wines that have achieved a
certain level of quality. Wines that carry
the VQA seal are made according to
strict standards and are tasted by a jury
of experts before being approved by
the British Columbia Wine Institute.

British Columbia's wines are increas-
ing in popularity, not only in Western
Canada, but also around the world.
After the adoption of provincial regula-
tions on the quality of wine in 1990,
sales increased, and the region's grands
crus carved out an enviable reputation,
receiving positive reviews. The VQA
program, for Vintners Quality Alliance,
was a driving force behind the revival
of this still-expanding industry.
WINE COUNTRY
British Columia's wineries are located
in two distinct production regions: the
southern part of Vancouver Island, and
the Fraser, Okanagan and Similkameen
valleys in the southern part of the prov-
ince.
Vancouver Island, located off the coast
of continental British Columbia, is the
newest wine region in the province.
Around one hour from the capital of
Victoria, the island's hillside wineries
