profile (around the muzzle) is fairly straight, unlike the grizzly's, which
is concave. In the Rockies, these bears are most often found in dense
forests at lower altitudes and in the clearings of mixed conifer and
broadleaf forests, usually near a lake or a river.
Grizzly Bear
Also known as the silvertip bear, the grizzly is a powerful carnivore
of imposing size. The grizzly's colouring varies between brown and
blond and its fur often appears to be greying, hence its name. Larger
and heavier than its cousin the black bear, the grizzly measures up to
2m when standing on its hind legs. Its average weight is about 200kg.
It is often diffi cult to tell a young grizzly from an adult black bear. You
run the greatest risk of meeting a grizzly in the valleys and prairies of
sub-alpine environments and in alpine tundra.
