Grande Prairie
As Alberta's fastest growing city,
Canada's forest capital and the Swan
City, Grande Prairie is a major busi-
ness and service centre in northern
Alberta, thanks to natural gas reserves
in the area. The town is so named be-
cause of
la grande prairie
, highly fertile
agricultural lands that are exceptional
this far north. Unlike most towns in
Alberta's north, Grande Prairie is not
what was left behind when the trading
post closed. From the start, homestead-
ers were attracted to the area's fertile
farmland.
The landmark design of Grande Prairie
Regional College, with its curved red
brick exterior, is the work of Alberta
Aboriginal architect Douglas Cardinal,
who also designed Gatineau, Québec's
Canadian Museum of Civilization.
