In-Depth Information
Northern
Alberta
This vast hinterland offers excellent oppor-
tunities for outdoor pursuits as well as the
chance to discover some of Alberta's cul-
tural communities. Distances are so great,
however, that touring the whole region is
inconceivable unless you have all sorts of
time and a car. The following tours explore
the northern frontiers of Alberta, passing
major attractions along the way.
Northern Alberta is home to a large
French-speaking population; across the
province, over 200,000 Albertans speak
French. The fi rst descendants of Europeans
to settle permanently on the rich Alberta
soil were French-speakers mainly from
Québec, who had often come by way of
the United States. In 1982, to demonstrate
their French character, Franco-Albertans
adopted a tricolour fl ag (blue, white and
red) sporting a fl eur-de-lis and Alberta's
wild rose.
