Agriculture remained the bread and butter of Alberta's capital until
the oil well at Leduc blew in. Since then, Edmonton has been one of
Canada's fastest growing cities.
DOWNTOWN
AND NORTH
OF THE RIVER
The River Valley Parks system lies
along the North Saskatchewan River
and consists of several small parks
where you can bicycle, jog, go swim-
ming, play golf or just generally enjoy
the natural surroundings. The amount
of land set aside for parks per capita
is higher in Edmonton than anywhere
else in the country.
With its impressive eight-storey glass
pyramid designed by local architect
Gene Dub, Edmonton's City Hall is
the centrepiece of the Downtown Arts
District. It is not the only exception-
al building in the area, though. The
Francis Winspear Centre for Music
is faced with Tyndall limestone and
bricks to match the city hall. Built with
a $6 million gift from Edmonton busi-
nessman Francis Winspear, the 1,900-
seat hall is considered an acoustic won-
