In-Depth Information
more and more Cochrane residents
now commute into nearby Calgary, just
20min away, to earn their living.
Rocky Mountain House
Despite its evocative name, Rocky
Mountain House is not a picturesque
log cabin in the woods but rather a
gateway town into the majestic Rocky
Mountains.
The Cochrane Ranche Provincial
Historic Site commemorates the
establishment in 1881 of the Cochrane
Ranche Company by Québec business-
man Senator Matthew Cochrane, and
the birth of Alberta's cattle industry.
The company controlled 189,000ha of
sweeping grasslands which, along with
three other ranches including the Bar U
Ranch, covered most of Alberta.
The Rocky Mountain House National
Historic Park is interesting be-
cause it exemplifi es, perhaps better
than any other historic site, the inextric-
able link between the fur trade and the
discovery and exploration of Canada.
