at the time lay south of the highway at
the foot of the mountain. All that re-
mains of the town is an old fi re hydrant.
The mountain's unstable structure, min-
ing, water and severe weather are be-
lieved to have contributed to the disas-
ter. A self-guided trail through the slide
area provides an interesting perspective
of its scope. Sixty-eight of the town's
residents were buried, but the disaster
might have been worse if it hadn't been
for a Canadian Pacifi c brakeman who,
amazingly, raced across the rocks to
stop an approaching passenger train.
