In-Depth Information
suffragettes speaking out for women's
equality in the Wainwright Hotel. Other
areas in the park recreate an 1880s
settlement, a fur trading post, a ranch,
a farm and the coming of the railroad.
Not only is this a magical place for chil-
dren, with rides in a steam engine and
a paddlewheeler boat on the reservoir,
but it is also a relaxing place to escape
the city and enjoy a picnic.
Canada Olympic Park , or COP,
built for the 1988 Winter Olympic
Games, lies on the western outskirts
of Calgary. This was the site of the
ski-jumping, bobsleigh, luge, freestyle
skiing and disabled events during the
games, and it is now a world-class
facility for training and competition.
Artifi cial snow keeps the downhill ski
slopes busy all winter.
Nose Hill Park has an area of
1,127ha. This windswept hill rises 230m
and is covered with native grasses and
a few bushes. There is a handful of
pretty hiking trails.
NORTHEAST
AND NORTHWEST
North of the Bow River, the biggest
draws in Northwest Calgary are Canada
Olympic Park, Nose Hill Park and
Bowness Park; Northeast Calgary has
grown considerably in recent years and
now has many hotels and restaurants,
in addition to the airport.
Bowness Park has always been a fa-
vourite escape for Calgarians. Visitors
can paddle around its pretty lagoons in
the summer, while in the winter they
freeze up to form the city's largest skat-
ing rink.
BIRTHPLACE OF
THE BLOODY CAESAR
Few people realize that the Bloody Caesar was invented right here in
Calgary in 1969 by a man named Walter Chell, when he was bever-
age manager at the Calgary Inn (now the Westin Calgary Hotel). Not
only did Chell invent the cocktail, but he was the brains behind its
main ingredient as well, a combination of mashed clams and tomato
juice, which he called clamato juice. You can even check with the
company that later patented the juice as to its true origins.
Others have tried to copy, change and even take credit for Chell's
recipe, but true Caesar drinkers know that 1.25 ounces of vodka,
5 ounces of Clamato juice and 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, all
seasoned with salt, pepper and celery salt and garnished with a celery
stalk combine to make the real thing!
