one of the most popular destinations in
the Rockies.

Kananaskis Valley
Kananaskis Village consists mainly of
a central square surrounded by two
luxurious hotels. The region's leading
resort, it was offi cially inaugurated in
1987, and its construction was funded
by the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust
and a number of private investors.
Canmore
The name Canmore comes from the
Gaelic Ceann mor , which means “big
head.” The name was given as a nick-
name to Scottish king Malcolm III, son
of Duncan I, who became king in 1054
and established his place in history
by killing the usurper Macbeth. After
searching for the most practical route
for the railway to the west, Canadian
Pacifi c chose to go through the Bow
Valley. It was decided that the supply
station for the project would be placed
There are many ranches along the south-
ern route that crosses the Kananaskis
Valley. As they are passing through the
area, travellers often encounter herds of
cattle that seem quite at home in the
middle road. Activities here include cart
rides, rodeos and river rafting.
