the shore houses a souvenir shop, a
restaurant-café and the offi ces of a tour
company that organizes trips to little
Spirit Island, the ideal vantage point to
admire the surrounding mountain tops.
Hiking trails have been cleared in
Maligne Canyon so that visitors
can admire this spectacular narrow
gorge abounding with cascades, fos-
sils and potholes sculpted by the tur-
bulent waters. Several bridges span the
canyon. The fi rst offers a view of the
falls; the second, of the effect of ice on
rock; the third marks the gorge's deep-
est point.
Jasper
The town of Jasper takes its name
from an old fur-trading post which was
founded in 1811 by William Henry of the
North West Company. Jasper is a small
town of barely 5,000 residents which
owes its tourist development to its geo-
graphic location and the train station
that was built here in 1911. When the
Icefi elds Parkway was opened in 1940,
the number of visitors who wanted to
Maligne Lake is one of the pretti-
est lakes in the Rockies. Water activities
such as boating, fi shing and canoeing
are possible here, and a short trail runs
