Creating a connection to the Northwind database
We have attached a Northwind database to SQL server 2012 NJ following the steps
in Chapter 1, Overview and Installation - SQL Server Reporting Services 2012, or we ran a
script to create the database. We will be connecting to that database.
1.
In the Model menu drop-down list, click on Import From Data Source .
The Connect to a Data Source page of Table Import Wizard is displayed.
You can connect to a great many data sources such as the ones listed here:
° Microsoft SQL Server
° Microsoft SQL Azure
° Microsoft SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse
° Microsoft Access
° Oracle
° Teradata
° Sybase
° Informix
° IBM DB2
° OLEDB/ODBC
° Microsoft Analysis Services
° Azure DataMarket dataset
° Other feeds
° Excel file
° Text file
It may be noted that Microsoft recently made a major move
in its push to encompass big data by releasing Windows
Azure HDInsight as one of its cloud services. This enables
enterprise to crunch huge data volumes of both structured
and unstructured data using Microsoft SQL Server and the
Hadoop files. Of course, the Microsoft BI stack can leverage
this new offering and Power View and PowerPivots have
a great role to play. Read more at http://redmondmag.
