Report subscription and delivery
You make a delivery request by creating a subscription. The delivery takes place
at a certain time (by an event or a timer) in a format (Word, PDF, Excel, and so on.)
in which you have requested a delivery. The delivery may reach the recipient in a
number of ways. Some of these have already been discussed in Chapter 3 , Overview of
SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 Architecture, Features, and Tools . Subscriptions are
created so that the reports are sent to the destination e-mail or to a shared folder. It is
important to note that subscription is not available for all versions of SQL Server 2012.
The version used for this topic, the Enterprise Edition does support subscriptions.
A subscription needs to be defined and these are the items to be defined:
• A pointer to the location of the report that can run unattended
(report to use stored credentials and use no credentials)
• If delivery by e-mail, the e-mail address
• Delivery format (PDF, Word, and so on)
• Event that starts the subscription processing (timer and a schedule)
• If the report runs as a snapshot, you can specify that the subscription
runs whenever the snapshot is refreshed
• Parameters used when running the report (only if the report requires
parameters, otherwise it is optional)
