Summary
A whole range of topics related to SQL Server Reporting Services were covered in
this chapter beginning with the installation of all programs needed for exploring
RS 2012 and summarized in a diagram the set up used for developing this topic.
This chapter provides an extremely brief review of SSRS describing both modes of
Report Server installation, the Native mode as well as the SharePoint Integrated
mode. There are some major differences, for example Reporting Services in Native
mode is a Windows Service whereas Reporting Services in SharePoint Integrated
mode is a SharePoint Shared Service. SharePoint Integration brings in many more
components that are absent if one were to focus on Native mode only. However,
SharePoint Integrated mode widens the usage of Reporting Services to non-
programmer types with the new features of Power View and self-service Data
Alerts and adds to business agility.
Many features of RS 2012 were described for both modes of installation and they
are described again in more detail in the rest of the topic. The reader is encouraged
to work through the hands-on exercises in the rest of the chapters to acquire the
skill to work with many features.
In the next chapter, Report Manager, the Web frontend for the Report Server,
will be described. All aspects of Report Management for the Report Server in
Native mode will be discussed and illustrated with many guided examples.
Report Management in SharePoint Integrated mode is described in Chapter 6 ,
Power View and Reporting Services .
