Creating reports using Visual Studio 2012
Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate, used in the examples, was downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/downloads . There are three
options— Install , Program download , and ISO file. . Choose the appropriate
option matching your resources. Here, the program was downloaded and
saved to a directory.
Software and hardware requirements
The software requirements (for only the x64 architecture) are listed here for
Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows server 2003 and 2008 with Sp2, and
Windows Server2008 R2.
The hardware requirements are as follows:
Processor : 1 GHZ or faster
Memory : 2 GB for 64-bit or more
Hard disk space : 3 GB
Hard disk drive : 5400 RPM
• DVD-ROM drive, monitor and mouse
Visual Studio 2012 provides Report Viewer controls that are of two types—one to
use with Windows Forms applications and the other for the Web (version 11.0.0.0,
a Microsoft .NET component), which can be embedded in a Web page but requires
a ScriptManager control from AJAX extensions in the toolbox. ScriptManager is an
AJAX Web Server control. A complete reference to Report Viewer Controls is found
at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms251671.aspx .
There are two modes for which these controls can be configured,
namely Local Mode and Remote Mode . The previously cited
reference and my previous edition ( Learning SQL Server Reporting
Services 2008 , ISBN: 9781847196187 ) completely explain the
two modes. The topic also describes the various programmatic
approaches to the Reporting Services applications. These will not
be described here.
