Getting Proper Reference
Having good reference when you are starting out is absolutely
imperative. You don't have to model on top of it in the isomet-
ric views, but you do have to look at it and rotate around your
model saying, “Does mine look like that?” Your model has to
look good from the front, but if you turn it 45 degrees to the
right does it look like a mutant? If so, you need to do some
tweaking from that vantage point. We'll talk about this more in
depth in this chapter, but just keep in mind you're not always
going to have the luxury of looking at the model from straight
on.
In production you usually know exactly what you want
when you start. If this is the case, you most likely have a
drawing or photo as a reference. For this character, let's just
use my final render as our reference. After you get some good
reference material, it is important to set it up in a way that will
improve your workflow the most. When you are done with
this chapter, your model should look something like this:
