Adjustment layers only af ect the layers beneath them, leaving any layers on top of them in
the Layers panel unaf ected. You can also hold down your Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac
OS) key and Click on a layer directly beneath the Adjustment layer to clip the adjustment
to just that layer, and not af ect layers beneath the clipped layer.

To experiment with this concept, open the i le named ps0905.psd.

Select the sky layer and create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer for it.

Drag the Saturation slider all the way to the left, ef ectively creating an RGB grayscale
image. Press OK.

Click and drag the adjustment layer up through the layers in the Layers panel to see
how the position of the adjustment layer af ects the layers beneath.

You can experiment with several blending modes to create a more natural blend with
a pattern i ll layer. In the example in this lesson, Multiply was selected, but other
modes, such as Darken and Lighten, can create interesting results as well.

Global Lighting helps to keep the light source consistent between layer styles. This
way, the light source for a shadow is the same as for the bevel and emboss, helping the
image lighting ef ects look more realistic.
