The results in the third segment of the table show that both the pipe length and diameter have
to be modified if the full correlation between the volumes and flows is to be achieved. As a
result, P02 will become shorter and of smaller diameter, while P03 becomes longer and with
bigger D . Satisfying at the same time the condition of the maximum available head loss in
each pipe means that, next to the nodal demand, this combination will also be influenced by
the nodal elevations and the source head(s). A 'snap-shot' conclusion is that the correlation
between pipe volumes and flows in optimized networks will be stronger the more even the
distribution of geometric and hydraulic parameters is. This point can also be illustrated on a
simple serial network in Figure 7.20.
