A number of options are to be selected before the network generation process starts, which
will depend from the selected mode of generation: random or non-random. Those include the
number and the range of networks to be generated, the maximum number of nodal
connections (can also be unlimited) and the handling of the matrix columns (in the non-
random generation) influencing the complexity and variety of generated networks. The
second group of the input settings is related to those shown in Table 4.12.
4.6.1 Random Generation
The input settings available in random generation process are listed in Figure 4.17. This is
more straight forward process to launch but also more erratic to end. Therefore, a couple of
options in the menu are made to control it more efficiently. These are described in the
following bullets:
-
Required number of networks . The preferred number of networks to be generated is
specified first. Whether this number will be eventually reached depends on the total
number of junctions and links, selected maximum junction degree and finally, the
duplications of layouts that can be caused by random generation.
-
Range of links . The generation can be conducted without any limitation in number of
links for given number of junctions ('full range of links'). Alternatively, only the networks
with number of links specified within certain range ('links from' - 'links to') shall be taken
into consideration.
-
Limit of duplication . Random generation process can cause duplication of layouts. All the
duplicates will of course be eliminated in the screening process, but a boundary of
duplication is needed to terminate the generation process in case other run parameters
have been selected so that the selected number of generated networks is infeasible.
Otherwise, the generation process could run endlessly.
