Example.of.leather.gloves.
gloves. made. with. other. synthetic. materials. are. cut-. and. abrasive-resistant. (see.
FigureĀ 24.8).and.may.withstand.some.diluted.acids..These.materials.do.not.stand.up.
well.against.alkalis.and.solvents.

These.gloves.are.made.of.cotton.or.other.fabric.to.provide.varying.degrees.of.protec-
tion..Fabric.gloves.can.protect.against.dirt,.slivers,.chafing,.and.abrasion..They.do.
not. provide. suficient. protection,. however,. to. be. used. with. rough,. sharp,. or. heavy.
materials..However,.adding.a.plastic.coating.to.some.fabric.gloves.strengthens.them.
and.makes.them.effective.protection.for.a.variety.of.tasks.
Coated.fabric.gloves.made.of.cotton.lannel.with.napping.on.one.side.work.well.
for.many.tasks..By.coating.the.un-napped.side.with.plastic,.fabric.gloves.are.trans-
formed.into.general-purpose.hand.protection.offering.slip-resistant.qualities..These.
gloves. are. used. for. tasks. ranging. from. handling. bricks. and. wire. rope. to. handling.
chemical. containers. in. laboratory. operations.. When. selecting. gloves. to. protect.
against.chemical.exposure.hazards,.always.check.with.the.manufacturer.(or.review.
the.manufacturer's.product.literature).to.determine.the.gloves'.effectiveness.against.
the.speciic.chemicals.and.conditions.in.the.workplace.

Gloves.made.of.rubber.(latex,.nitrile,.or.butyl),.plastic,.or.synthetic.rubber-like..material.
(such.as.Neoprene).protect.workers.from.burns,.irritation,.and.dermatitis.caused.by.
contact. with. oils,. greases,. solvents,. and. other. chemicals.. The. use. of. rubber. gloves.
also.reduces.the.risk.of.exposure.to.blood.and.other.potentially.infectious.substances.
