EXCURSION TO MACAU
Macau, the final bastion of Portugal's great 16th-century empire, is much more than just a
quirk of history. Here, where East and West first met, parts of the enclave still beautifully
combine a taste of Asia with something of the sunny atmosphere of the Mediterranean. In its
21st-century incarnation, Macau has also taken on some of the exuberance of Las Vegas,
thanks to the excitement that the new casino developments and booming visitor numbers
have generated.
Macau's historic centre, the Largo do Senado, with its colonial architecture, has a dis-
tinctly Mediterranean flavour. Colonnaded public buildings, iron balconies, winding streets,
