Lamma
Less than 30 minutes by ferry from Pier 4 in Central, Lamma Island E [map] is perfect for
hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, lazing on the beach or just relaxing and exploring a car-
free village at your own pace. Hong Kong's third largest island has a population of only
about 6,000; it is still largely undeveloped and has a very laid-back atmosphere. Archaeolo-
gists believe that Lamma has probably been inhabited for some 4,000 years, and relics from
'Hong Kong's Stone Age Island' are on display at the Hong Kong Museum of History. The
largest structure on the island is the gigantic power station that supplies electricity to the
whole of Hong Kong Island.
Try and plan a trip for a weekday if you can, as Lamma tends to be swamped by day-
trippers at the weekend and on public holidays. You will need to visit in May and June to
see the Dragonboat and Tin Hau festivals.
Lamma's principal settlements are Yung Shue Wan on the northwest coast and Sok
Kwu Wan to the south. Both villages have ferry services and waterfront restaurants with ex-
cellent and inexpensive Cantonese food, and plenty of fresh seafood. Most of the population
is Chinese, but Yung Shue Wan is an unusually multicultural enclave.
