Nearby is Po Lin Monastery ( www.plm.org.hk ; daily 8am-6pm, vegetarian lunch:
11.30am-4.30pm) and the rewarding walk up 268 steps to the Tian Tan Buddha statue and
glorious views. The monastery is strictly vegetarian and visitors are warned not to bring any
meat with them.
From Ngong Ping you can travel by land for an hour through hills dotted with more re-
mote monasteries, by taxi or bus (21) to the pretty fishing village at Tai O p [map] . The
Kwan Tai temple dates from 1530. Many villagers are descended from Tanka fishing people
and live in stilt houses above the water. Tai O is a good place to try to spot Hong Kong's en-
dangered pink dolphin from land, but from the water only organised tours such as Dolphin-
watch (for more information, click here ) are sanctioned by conservationists. The village is
also home to the Hong Kong Shaolin Wushu Centre ( www.shaolincc.org.hk ), which pro-
motes the traditional Chinese martial art. Take bus 11 back to Tung Chung MTR or bus 1
back to Ngong Ping.
