Kowloon Walled City
South of Wong Tai Sin and Diamond Hill is another attractive garden, built to commemorate
the notorious Kowloon Walled City, which remained Chinese territory after the British
leased the New Territories in 1898. A haven for illegal activity, the ramshackle multi-storey
slum was demolished in 1992.
Kowloon Walled City Park [map] (daily 6.30am-11pm) is modelled on a Jiangen
garden from the early Qing dynasty and has preserved the southern gate of the old walled
city.
The New Territories can be explored via buses and the MTR network, including an over-
land Light Rail Transit (LRT) system connecting towns and estates in the west. Route maps
at stops and stations are bilingual and the Octopus card makes it simple. Green New Territ-
ories taxis are also an option. The HKTB's Land Between and Heritage tours are good ways
to cover a lot of ground in a short time.
