and Ying Ying. The atoll reef with layers of sea life, the shark tunnel and eerie jellyfish dis-
plays are also crowd pleasers.
Repulse Bay
Continuing around the coast in a counter-clockwise direction, Deep Water Bay offers a good
beach and harbours. The next inlet is Repulse Bay ¤ [map] , a sandy crescent backed by
green hills and busy with day-trippers. Notice the massive wall of condominiums, built in
the 1980s. Apparently the developers left the space in the middle for good feng shui - to en-
able the mountain's 'dragon spirit' to retain access to the sea.
Stanley
Stanley [map] was once one of the main fishing villages on the island. Stanley Market
( www.hk-stanley-market.com ; 10am-6pm) is well known for its clothes bargains in
'Western sizes' - plus plenty of souvenirs. The waterfront is lined with restaurants and bars,
many of them with sea-view balconies. A few minutes' walk along the bay are Stanley
Plaza shopping mall and historic Murray House . The latter, built in Central in 1844, dis-
mantled in 1982, and rebuilt here in 1999, houses the Hong Kong Maritime Museum
( www.hkmaritimemuseum.org ; Tue-Fri and Sun 10am-6pm, Sat 10am-7pm; charge) which
tells the story of shipping in Hong Kong.
