In 1860, a treaty gave Britain a permanent beach-head on the Chinese mainland - the
Kowloon peninsula, directly across Victoria harbour. In 1898, under the Convention of Pek-
ing, China leased the New Territories and 235 more islands to Britain for what then seemed
an eternity - 99 years.
