Northern and Middle Mississippi
To reach the Leaf Wilderness, go south from McClain on SH 57; from the intersection
where SH 57 splits off from US 98, it is 7 miles to a parking area on the left (east) where the
Leaf Trail goes into the wilderness area. This trail winds around the southern part of the area
and then heads north into the floodplain.
Black Creek Wilderness
Located east of SH 29 and north of Wiggins, Black Creek Wilderness is 5,000 acres of pre-
served forest along Black Creek. Black Creek Trail runs through the wilderness area and is
the best way to access the area on land. A canoe float trip down Black Creek is also a good
way to see this place. The bird life here is typical for the area and habitats and is fairly plenti-
ful along the creek. In spring, watch for acadian flycatcher, belted kingfisher, northern parula
