Southern Mississippi
GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE
Gulf Islands National Seashore is part of the National Park system; most of the park con-
sists of barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico off the Mississippi coast and portions of bar-
rier islands in Florida. In Mississippi, there is one unit of the park that is onshore and very
accessible; this is the Davis Bayou unit. Offshore, one can reach West Ship Island by ferry
during the warmer months, and the other islands can be reached by private or chartered boat.
Sheltered from the massive development that has occurred along most of the Gulf coast, these
barrier islands provide a beautiful example of the primitive southern coast and make good
places for watching for shore birds, migrants, and some pelagic birds.
