In-Depth Information
In autumn, the campground is a good spot to look for migrants. Large flocks of mixed
warblers such as black-throated green warbler, common yellowthroat, ruby-crowned kinglet,
golden-crowned kinglet, and other warblers in their drabber plumage pass through. Wood-
peckers are also easy to spot in the campground, along with standard birds such as white-
breasted nuthatch, Carolina chickadee, tufted titmouse, Carolina wren, and field sparrow. On
some of the trails through the foothills near the campground, keep a look out for migrating
Swainson's thrush during the fall; I have spotted them several times along the Shakleford
Point trail in the hollow near to where that trail hits the Foothills trail at the main road.
