hit-or-miss during years when the numbers of wintering waterfowl are low. Rusty blackbirds
can be found in the woods near the observation tower during the winter. The fields along
the roads are a good place to see red-tailed hawk, northern harrier, American kestrel, eastern
meadowlark, vesper sparrows, water pipit, turkey vulture, black vulture, field sparrow, and
eastern bluebird.
Eufaula NWR
The Kennedy Impoundment unit is located south of the bridge over the lake, south of Lake-
point State Park; there is a dirt access road off to the east of US 431. Park here and walk along
the dike to get views of ponds, fields, and the lake. Various egrets, great blue heron, kingfish-
er, and waterfowl can be seen in this area. Around the parking area in spring and summer,
check the Spanish-moss-draped oak trees for northern parula warbler.
