The refuge is reached by taking Choctaw County Road 21 north from US 84 near mile
marker 14. County Road 21 dead-ends into County Road 14; turn east and drive 4.2 miles to
Womack Hill, where a sign to the refuge will point down a dirt road to the south. This dirt
road is rough and only one and a half lanes wide in places; but luckily, it soon turns to pave-
ment. Just before this paved road reaches Lenoir Landing on the river, a dirt road to the west
takes you a short distance to the entrance of the refuge. Signs prominently mark each turn.
Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge
Being remote and lightly-visited, the refuge is not set up to handle large, or even moderate,
numbers of visitors. This has worked out well for the birds, which get very little disturbance.
Being closed from December 1 to March 1 each year, the refuge is mostly inaccessible during
the prime wintering season for waterfowl. However, if you contact the refuge personnel prior
to a visit during these dates, they will often make arrangements for you or your group to vis-
it. Most of the refuge is inaccessible except by water; a boat ramp is provided near the en-
