Dauphin Island represents the best spot in Alabama to catch what is known as a “fallout”
during the spring migration; during the spring months, a storm or strong low pressure center
may make extra difficulty for the birds migrating across the Gulf of Mexico. When these
conditions occur, the birds that survive the journey will land and collect on the first piece of
suitable land that they encounter upon reaching the mainland. Then those birds will remain
at that site longer than usual in order to eat, rest, and regain their strength for their northward
voyage. Although many birds will stop once they reach first land, they may not stop for long
if they are in good shape; thus a storm over the Gulf can mean a great number of essentially
