Appendix 1
A Checklist of Alabama and Mississippi Birds
This Appendix is based upon the
Field Checklist of Alabama Birds prepared by the Alabama Ornithological Society, checklists
of the various parks and refuges in the two states, and confirmed sightings of species seen after
the date of the AOS checklist, which is October 1991. This list contains 406 species, two of
which are extinct and three of which are extirpated. The species marked hypothetical are those
listed as such by the AOS; however, some species listed as hypothetical in late 1991 have since
been confirmed by sightings by several experienced birders, and those species are listed here
as Accidental.
The English and scientific names and sequence follow the
ABA Checklist: Birds of the Continental United States and Canada , published by the Americ-
an Birding Association (Fourth Edition, 1990).
The following symbols are used:
(X) Extinct
(E) Extirpated
(A) Accidental
(H) Hypothetical
(I) Introduced
(En) Endangered or Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act
Has bred in these states
