To reach the refuge from SH 25, south of Starkville and north of Louisville, watch for signs
pointing to the east; the refuge is about 25 miles from the highway down a road that altern-
ates between pavement and dirt, but is mostly dirt. This road is known as the Louisville Road
and it passes through the tiny community of Betheden.
Stop at the headquarters and ask the rangers about current birding conditions and hot spots.
Winter is the time when hundreds, and even thousands, of ducks and Canada geese winter at
the refuge, primarily on Loakfoma and Bluff lakes. Bald eagles and osprey will also use the
lakes during winter. During some winters, white-fronted geese and tundra swans have been
seen among the Canada geese. Just before the headquarters is a small parking area. From this
