Much of the forest is wet, swampy hardwood forest: ideal for wood ducks. Spring and
early summer bring swamp warblers here; prothonotary warbler, hooded warbler, yellow-
throated warbler, and American redstart can all be heard and seen in various areas of the
forest. The Long Bayou Greentree Reservoir and the Sunflower Greentree Reservoir are two
good areas for waterfowl in winter; however, watching the waterfowl is another matter, as
these are flooded hardwood areas. The trees make long-distance vision impossible. One can
walk along the levees that form these flooded woodlands and watch for birds from them. Be
careful during hunting season, as this national forest is really geared toward that use of the
bird wildlife. Sunflower Greentree Reservoir is right on SH 16 between Forest Roads 703
and 715; it is marked, and there are two parking areas. Across the highway from the reservoir
is the Big Sunflower River, and this area represents the most accessible birding spots in Delta
National Forest. SH 16 continues west to the town of Rolling Fork.
