Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Located west of Yazoo City, Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is mostly inaccess-
ible unless one is willing to walk great distances. However, two good dirt roads run along the
levees on either side of the Lower Auxiliary Channel, which runs through the middle of the
refuge. This refuge is run by the Fish and Wildlife Service in an area that is part of a Corps
of Engineers flood control project. The two levee roads give access to and overlooks of hard-
wood bottomlands, swamps, fields, and flooded fields. The easiest way to reach these levee
roads is to take US 49W west from Yazoo City; a sign points south to the refuge, and this is
